Welcome to Infant Swim Resources (ISR), survival swimming for infants and young children nationwide.

Staci & Nancy are currently fully booked for Summer 2008
and taking a waiting list for the Fall.

We primarily teach in the Northern VA and DC Metro area, including Herndon and Centreville.

As a certified Infant Swim Resource Instructor, we provide one-on-one, individualized Survival Swim Instruction for Infants and Children. The ISR mission is:

"To prevent drowning, and enrich the lives of children, by teaching them to swim."

While no lessons can 'drown proof' your child, ISR can teach your little one to survive in the water - to become an effective swimmer or floater in any depth of water, regardless of the water environment, or what they are wearing.

You must ask yourself... Would your child know what to do if he found himself in the water alone?

These lessons are not a replacement for parent vigilance, but not every parent can be everywhere. Even the most vigilant parents can't prevent every possible interaction with water. These skills add another layer of drowning prevention and protection for your child.

For more information on the ISR program, including its history, an overview of the methodology structure, medical concerns, FAQ's, video clips, and to locate other certified ISR Instructors around you, please visit the official ISR website at: www.infantswim.com

Pediatric Drowning Statistics

Even if you don't have a pool or lake near you, water hazards can appear when you least expect them.  Consider that most infants and toddlers love the water; yet according to the Center for Disease Controls most recent statistics (Nationwide for 2004)...

Drowning was the #2 cause of death in children under age 6 - with 493 deaths.

The specifics for Virginia...

*54% drown in a swimming pool

*18% from a fall into natural water

*9% of those in a bathtub

For every child under 14 who drowns, 5 more receive ER treatment for non-fatal submersion injuries, often requiring long term hospitalization or care.

For more specifics, see the CDC fact sheet on drowning at http://cdc.gov/ncipc/factsheets/drown.htm

Parent Guidelines Infant Swimming Resource

1.      NO BUDS FORM = NO LESSON.

Every child under 3 requires a full daily BUDS form.
This form enables me to review detailed information occurring in the past 24 hours that may or may not affect the lesson.
This is for the health of our child.

2.     NO APPLES OR PEACHES WITHIN 24 HOURS OF LESSON

Also no products that have these fruits or juices in them.
These can cause big tummy aches.
Should your child accidentally get apple/peach in their diet please make sure
it is recorded on the BUDS form so the lesson can be adjusted.

3.     BRING THREE TOWELS TO EVERY LESSON.

One towel to cover the pool deck.
The second, the child is placed on it.
The third towel is used to cover and dry the child.
This is for the health safety of your child.

4.     NO DISPOSABLE SWIM DIAPERS

No swimmies, Little Swimmers ®, or other store bought disposable swim diapers.
If wish you use these, fine, but they must be covered by an ISR approved swim diaper,
similar to the one provided in your parent kit.
This swim diaper is NOT disposable, and must fit securely around the waist and legs and can be laundered.
It may be worn alone or under a swim suit. Please visit www.isrsealstore.com if you additional swim diapers.

5.     NO FOOD 2 HOURS PRIOR TO THE LESSON.

Especially diary products.
Children under the age of 3 should have NO APPLE PRODUCTS or PEACH PRODUCTS within 24 hours of a lesson.
This means no juice, cookies, breads or cereals containing them.
Refer to the Parent Resource Book for additional information regarding foods to avoid and why.

6.     NO LESSONS FOR SICK OR CONTAGIOUS CHILDREN.

If prolonged illness occurs, I will do my best to fill the time slot with a refresher to avoid cost to you.

7.     PLEASE BE ON TIME.

Your promptness is essential for keeping on my schedule for other students.
If you are late, I will try to accommodate you, but I cannot guarantee your child’s lesson will take place.
Call or email if you are running late and want me to take another child that may have come early.

8.     PAYMENT IS DUE EACH MONDAY.

Each week’s fee (payable to Staci Otto) is due on Monday of that week.
If I cancel lessons in advance, you are not required to pay.  If you skip the lesson, you are responsible for paying for it.

9.     MESSAGES TO PARENT OR INSTRUCTOR

You can always call and leave a message for me, or leave a note in your student file to have me call you.
I will leave general messages on a board at the pool by the file box.

10. WHAT IF WEATHER IS A CONCERN?

If you are unsure about lessons due to weather please email or call  703-867-6451. I will try to notify everyone by email and/or leave a voice message if I must postpone or cancel any lessons.

11. PLEASE BE CONSIDERATE OF THE OTHER SWIMMERS.

Do not leave your trash behind, including used diapers.  I will provide a trash receptacle at poolside.

An Introduction to ISR

INFANT SWIMMING RESOURCE

Ages 6 months to 6 years

“to prevent drowning and enrich the lives of children by teaching them to swim”

  www.infantswim.com

Infant Swimming Resource (ISR) is a nationally recognized system of aquatic survival instruction for infants and young children. The program focuses on educating parents and children about aquatic survival and safety issues.

ISR is the product of more than 40 years of research and development by Dr. Harvey Barnett. More than 150,000 infants and young children have gone through our program with more than 5 million safe and effective lessons to our credit.

ISR Instructors are the most highly trained and qualified instructors in any swimming program in the country and must undergo strict re-certification testing annually. Each instructor is academically trained and tested in areas such as child psychology, physiology, anatomy and behavioral science to provide the safest lesson possible for your child. In addition, each instructor spends a minimum of 60 hours hands on, supervised in-water training working with actual students.

Please visit our award winning national website at www.infantswim.com to learn more about ISR, the most comprehensive drowning prevention program in the world.

What your child will learn:

·       6-12 months
A baby from 6 months to 12 months will learn how to hold their breath underwater, roll onto their back and float unassisted until someone rescues them.

·       Over 1 year old
A child over the age of 1 year will learn how to hold their breath underwater, swim head down, roll onto their back to float, rest and breathe; then roll back over to resume swimming until they reach the side of the pool and crawl out.

·       All children will learn how to perform the skills in different types of clothes and in situations that simulate an accidental fall into the water.

·       Upon completion of the ISR program, your child will have the survival skills necessary to save himself along with the enjoyment of recreational swimming.

Class Structure:

·       Your child’s classes are 5 days a week, Monday – Friday.

·       Classes are one-on-one only – no group lessons.

·       Class duration is 10 minutes or less.
Much is accomplished in a short but very intense private lesson.

·       Your child will have the same 10 minute time slot each day, unless prior arrangements are made.

·       You can expect your child to finish in 4 – 6 weeks.

Daily Diary of Student Health Activities :

The parent is responsible for ensuring the completion of the daily diary of the child’s activities. This is known as the BUDS form, which stands for Bowels, Urine, Diet and Sleep monitoring.  This information is critical for the instructor to monitor regularly to ensure the health of the child throughout the lessons.  The instructor will explain further the importance of this information and how to fill this form out.

Refresher Classes:

Upon completion of their initial lessons, every child should take a short 1 –3 week refresher course the following year.

Weekly Fees:

$115 per week.
$125* per week at your private pool (*depending on driving distance)

Need – based scholarships are available.  Discounts are available for siblings, families in the military, teachers, fire fighters and police officers.

This includes 5 private lessons per week, held each weekday.  Classes are 10 minutes in duration.  Payments are due each Monday and can be paid by cash, money order, or personal check.

National Registration:

There is a one-time ISR national registration fee of $105.00 for each new student that is separate from your weekly class fees. This can be paid online via pay pal, credit card, or personal check.

Your registration fee covers the cost of health screening procedures for physical and developmental readiness of your child, by our team of medical professionals.

You will also receive your ISR Introductory Kit, which will include your Parent Resource Book, swim diaper, t-shirt, etc. This will be mailed to you within 3 days after completion of your registration.

Thanks so much for your interest in Infant Swim Resources.

My inspiration for becoming certified as an instructor was to get this training for my own children to keep our family as safe as possible.  I hope that I can do the same for your family as well.

Please do not hesitate to call me with any questions at all.
